Fresh Flower Care…

It all begins with an idea.

Zinnias have amazing vase life if you take care of them (which is SUPER easy!). Take a peak at these quick tips to help extend the life of your flowers!

Vase Preparation

  • Clean Vase: Use a clean vase to reduce the risk of bacteria, which can shorten the life of the flowers.

  • Fresh Water: Fill the vase with fresh, cool water. If available, add a floral preservative to the water to help nourish the flowers and reduce bacterial growth. If you don’t have floral preservative at home, you can add a splash of bleach or a little sugar to the water.

Arranging the Flowers

  • Trim Again: Before placing the zinnias in the vase, trim the stems again at a 45-degree angle.

  • Remove Lower Leaves: Remove any leaves that will be submerged in water to prevent them from rotting and fouling the water.

Daily Care Routine

  • Change Water Daily: Replace the water in the vase every day with fresh, cool water. This helps keep the flowers hydrated and reduces bacterial buildup.

  • Re-Cut Stems Daily: Trim a small portion (about ¼ inch) off the stems each day to maintain their ability to absorb water.

  • Monitor Water Level: Ensure the vase is always filled with water, as zinnias are thirsty flowers.

Placement and Environment

  • Cool Location: Place the vase in a cool, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and drafts, which can cause the flowers to wilt prematurely.

  • Avoid Ripening Fruit: Keep zinnias away from ripening fruits, which emit ethylene gas that can cause the flowers to age faster.

Remove Faded Blooms

  • Check Daily: Remove any blooms that start to wilt or fade to keep the arrangement looking fresh and to prevent the spread of decay to other flowers.

By following these steps, your cut zinnias should remain fresh and beautiful for as long as possible, typically lasting up to 7-10 days.
